It has been represented on the ICANN Board and has also contributed to Policy Development through the Business Constituency, the Intellectual Property Constituency, several Working Groups and initiatives focussed on security and stability. Nokia was also a founding member of the .mobi gTLD registry. Nokia plans to leverage its prior knowledge of registry creation and governance in operating any new gTLD.
Nokia is applying for “NOKIA” string, and will deploy a Standard Registry to meet its business needs which include:
• To ensure that the integrity of the Nokia brand, recognised as one of the most valuable brands in the world by InterBrand, is maintained at the highest available level in the domain name system: Nokia has a portfolio of registered intellectual property rights around the world. Securing the string “NOKIA” in the domain name system is an extension of current brand development and protection.
• To keep Nokia at the forefront of innovation and technological development: Nokia plans to use best-practice DNS configuration and functionality, and will be monitoring and contributing to the development of new standards and services through participation in ICANN and the IETF.
In a separate application Nokia will also be applying for the Chinese translation of Nokia, “诺基亚” string.
