The purpose of the .DDS top-level domain is to offer duly licensed dentists an exclusive opportunity to present themselves on the Internet in a uniquely distinctive and memorable manner. At present, no .DDS TLD exists. Dentists wanting to use a domain name to indicate their unique professional status as a licensed dentist are unable to do that currently with any legacy top-level domain. Because registration and renewal in the .DDS TLD will require applicants and registrants to prove they are credentialed with the appropriate authority (such as a state dental or medical licensing association), the .DDS TLD will serve as a clear means of identifying and authenticating registrants as duly licensed dentists in their particular country or other relevant jurisdiction. Internet users, particularly potential patients or others dealing with a .DDS registrant will do so with confidence they are dealing with an appropriately licensed dentist.

Dentistry is a well-controlled and highly specialized profession. In all countries in which dentists practice, there is a licensing requirement in order to become a dentist. Also there are different facets of dentistry including, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics, endodontics, cosmetic dentistry, and reconstructive dentistry, to name a few. As of 2008, there were 57 dental schools in the United States accredited by the American Dental Associationʹs Commission on Dental Accreditation. The American Dental Association lists the total number of dentists as approximately 181,774. http:⁄⁄www.healthcaresalaryonline.com⁄dentist-salary.html, accessed 3-16-2012).
